Federal Pell Grant

The Federal Pell Grant is a federally-funded grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education. General qualifications regarding the Federal Pell Grants include:

  • Effective July 2012, Pell Grants may be received for no more than six full academic years
  • Need Based
  • Awarded to students based on results from FAFSA
  • Available to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's degree or professional degree
  • Proration based on the number of hours a student is enrolled during a semester
  • Students who do not receive their full Federal Pell Grant award during the fall and spring terms are eligible for the remaining amount during the summer

Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

The FSEOG is a federally-funded grant awarded by the Office of Financial Aid. The Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG) provides aid to undergraduate students who would not otherwise be financially able to attend college. A student must be accepted for enrollment, show evidence of academic promise, and be capable of maintaining good standing in the chosen course of study. Grants may be renewed for the four years of undergraduate study, subject to the availability of funds, unless a change in the family's financial condition causes the student to be ineligible. Grants are awarded in compliance with eligibility based on federal guidelines.

The SEOG is awarded on a first come-first served basis until available funds are expended.

The Alabama Student Assistance Program (ASAP)

The ASAP program is a state/federal aid program designed to provide Alabama residents with financial assistance for undergraduate postsecondary education. Grants are awarded for one year. The grant is renewable, but a new application must be submitted each year. All awards are determined by student eligibility requirements, available funds, and student need. 

The ASAP is awarded on a first come-first served basis until available funds are expended.

Federal TEACH Grant

The Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant provides funding to students intending to pursue a teaching career in a high-need field.

Eligible students must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen
  • Have a current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA) on file and be eligible for federal student aid
  • Be enrolled in a degree program at either the undergraduate or graduate level
  • Receive a GPA of at least 3.25 for each payment period
    • From high school for first-year students
    • From college for other students
    • OR score above the 75th percentile on an admissions test, such as SAT, ACT, or GRE
  • Agree to teach full-time for at least four years as a highly qualified teacher in a high-need field

Does the TEACH Grant have to be repaid?

 If the student does not teach for at least four years within eight years of completing the program under the following conditions:

  • As a Highly Qualified Teacher
  • In an elementary or secondary school or educational service agency that serves low-income students. The current listing of schools by state can be found at https://studentaid.gov/app/tcli.action.
